How PTA Mobile Tax Is Calculated in Pakistan
PTA does not set an arbitrary figure. Your PTA approved charges are built from the device’s customs value (C&F) assessed by the FBR, plus regulatory duty, sales tax, income tax (withholding), IT duty and the mobile levy. Because the FBR valuation is set in US Dollars, the final rupee amount moves with the exchange rate and the FBR valuation rulings, which is why used-phone tax fell after the January 2026 revision.
For any device that is not individually listed, PTA tax is charged on the C&F value slab it falls into:
| Device Value (C&F, USD) | PTA Tax on Passport | PTA Tax on CNIC |
|---|---|---|
| Up to $30 | ₨ 1,000 | ₨ 1,500 |
| $30 – $100 | ₨ 3,200 | ₨ 4,323 |
| $100 – $200 | ₨ 9,580 | ₨ 11,561 |
| $200 – $350 | ₨ 39,500 | ₨ 49,000 |
| $350 – $500 | ₨ 57,000 | ₨ 68,000 |
| Above $500 | ₨ 107,300 | ₨ 130,700 |
Enter a device’s USD price in the calculator’s optional field to estimate tax from these slabs when your exact model is not listed.
CNIC vs. Passport PTA Registration: What’s the Difference?
Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) lets overseas Pakistanis and travellers register imported phones two ways, and the PTA approval charges differ significantly between them:
- Passport (within 60 days): If you register on your passport within 60 days of arriving in Pakistan, you pay the lower duty slab. This is the cheapest route for iPhone PTA charges and is ideal for travellers.
- CNIC Registration: Registering on your CNIC (or after the 60-day window) applies the higher tax bracket — used by most local buyers of imported or used devices.
For premium models such as the iPhone 13 Pro Max PTA approval charges or iPhone 12 Pro PTA charges, the gap between passport and CNIC registration can run into tens of thousands of rupees, so always compare both before you register.
How to Check PTA Tax by IMEI and Register on DIRBS
Your phone’s tax is tied to its IMEI. Before you pay, check the IMEI and confirm the device’s status, then register and pay through PTA’s DIRBS system:
- Find your IMEI: dial *#06# to display the IMEI number(s) for your device.
- Check PTA status by IMEI: send the IMEI in an SMS to 8484, or dial *8484#, to see whether the phone is already compliant or needs registration.
- Create a DIRBS account: sign up on the official PTA DIRBS portal (dirbs.pta.gov.pk) using your passport or CNIC.
- Add the device and generate a PSID: enter the IMEI, confirm the tax shown, and generate a PSID.
- Pay the PTA tax: pay the PSID through your bank app, ATM, or a mobile wallet such as JazzCash or Easypaisa.
- Confirmation: once payment clears, PTA whitelists your IMEI and the phone stays connected on every network.
PTA Tax for Overseas Pakistanis, Tourists and Filers
Overseas Pakistanis and travellers get one free temporary registration per entry, letting one phone work on a local SIM for up to 60 days before it must be registered. Registering on your passport within those 60 days always applies the lower duty slab, which is why passport registration is the cheapest route for imported phones.
Foreign tourists can use their international phone on roaming, or on a local SIM for 60 days, without paying PTA tax — duty only applies once you register a device long-term on a CNIC or passport.
PTA tax is the same whether you are a filer or non-filer on the customs, regulatory and sales-tax portions. The only difference is the withholding income-tax line, where non-filers pay a little more — a few hundred rupees on budget phones and a larger gap on flagships. Being a tax filer is still the cheaper option.
